Frost burnt playing fields
Mottled Green and Brown
Punctured by goal posts
And towering floodlights

The sacred geometry of
This seasons sporting rituals
Painted in white
Angle and curve,
Stretching across this
Manicured landscape

A fugitive shopping trolley
Stand silently
Enjoying the winter sun
Freed from its labours
No longer a servant
To our impulse and hunger,

But a shining chariot
Set forth on a quest
And dreaming of
Far horizons

We share a moment
The shopping trolley and I,
It glints defiantly
At a woman passing by
Burden by heavy supermarket bags
I ignore a phone call

We watch the ibis
Strut through the grass
And dream of
Far Horizons
